John Wark optimistic about Rangers making it ‘a lot harder’ for Liverpool at Ibrox

John Wark is hopeful Rangers will not be as bad as they were last week when they face Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League matchday four fixture on Wednesday, 12 October.

The Gers suffered a 2-0 defeat in the clash at Anfield on Tuesday last week where it took them more than 80 minutes to register their first shot on goal.

Wark, who is a two-time league winner with Liverpool, was quoted in a report by Football Scotland where he expressed optimism to see the Light Blues making it hard for Jurgen Klopp’s men on Wednesday.

“It was like you were watching a training game,” he said. “They sat back and if Darwin Nunez had been at it he could have scored four or five goals.

“The fact Allan McGregor was man of the match tells its own story. I wanted Rangers to give them a decent game and they didn’t. Liverpool played within themselves and were just strolling about. I was gutted. I didn’t think they would be that bad.

“I thought it would have been one of those European games where they got stuck into people

“Rangers will make it a lot harder for Liverpool at Ibrox but they’re going to have to play a lot better than they did at Anfield. I’m expecting – like you should expect – Rangers to have a right go at them, play at pace and get in about them.

“You just want them to prove themselves and do themselves justice by making a game of it, no matter the final score.”

Big night

Rangers came into this season hoping to finally get a chance to play amongst Europe’s elite after making a deep run in the Europa League last year.

Despite suffering three heavy defeats in the competition, it is nights like these that the Gers fans dreamed of during their more than a decade-long exile from the Champions League.

Even though the Light Blues have very little chance of making it to the next round or even staying in the hunt for a place in the Europa League, the fans will be hoping to see the players put their foot forward and surprise the visitors.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst will be looking to exploit the weakness of Liverpool, especially at a time when they are going through a horrid campaign on the domestic front where they are coming off the back of suffering another 3-2 defeat at the weekend against league leaders Arsenal.
