Finance Expert: Rangers not winning friends while at loggerheads with SPFL

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers...

Dan Plumley has insisted that Rangers are certainly not winning any friends while being at constant loggerheads with the SPFL over a number of issues.

The latest issue has been the new £150million TV deal, with the Daily Record reporting that the SPFL torpedoed the Bears to get the deal signed off by the other 11 Scottish Premiership clubs.

Finance Expert, Plumley, admitted that while Rangers may be ruffling feathers, nothing bad as ever really come from these disputes, with the money still going into the bank at the end of it all.

Rangers

“I think there is risk,” he exclusively told Ibrox News.

“There are a handful of examples, but when has it ever bothered Rangers to ruffle some feathers? I don’t think it has. There is the argument that you’re not winning any friends when you’re pushing back on the league all of the time, but even then, the worst that has happened to Rangers is they are still part of the deal, and they’re going to get the money from the deal, there is no financial fallout, but it’s a case of they think they can do it better.

“The challenge is at some point, you have to work with the league to do that – I think there is more value to be had in that deal, but that almost needs Rangers and Celtic to really work with the league and leverage that.

“That’s the challenge with Rangers and the league being at loggerheads, you’re not going to get leverage from what you could.”

Neil Doncaster SPFL

Neil Doncaster himself admitted that Rangers were going to vote for the new Sky TV deal, but only if the SPFL apologised over the Cinch row, burying two hatchets at once.

That didn’t happen, but it seems ludicrous that clubs were happy to sign off on a new deal that has been widely criticised and many believe could be worth more.

If Rangers are wrong for disputing that, someone would need to explain it further to us, it simply makes no sense.
