Neil McCann puzzled by Ridvan Yilmaz transfer after Rangers loss v Napoli
Neil McCann has been left puzzled by Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s decision to leave out Rangers summer signing Ridvan Yilmaz from the starting line-up so far.
The 21-year-old arrived at the Ibrox stadium this summer from Turkish club Besiktas. The Gers paid an initial fee in the region of £3.4 million, and the deal could potentially reach £5 million if add-ons are met.
However, Van Bronckhorst hasn’t given him enough game time, and he has continued with Borna Barisic, who was disappointing in the 3-0 loss against Napoli.
“Giovanni and Rangers have questions to answer,” McCann said to BBC Scotland (via Football Scotland).
“Yilmaz is the puzzler for me because that was a lot of money. He’s been on the bench all the time but surely he’s close to getting gametime?
“Barisic has done okay but there are deficiencies in his game. But when are we going to see the little left-back? I don’t know.
“These are the sort of questions that will fall on Giovanni’s desk because of the defeats and losing so many goals. Rangers fans will start questioning what is going on.”
The 21-year-old was expected to challenge Barisic for the left-back spot.
The Turkish international, however, is yet to start in any of the nine Scottish league and Champions League games.
His only appearance has come against Queen of the South in the Premier Sports Cup. Unless he is injured, which does not seem to be the case, it is really baffling that Barisic keeps playing games ahead of him.
In fact, Van Bronckhorst’s team selection has come under a lot of question this season as Rangers suffered three losses in a row following their 3-0 defeat against Napoli.
The Dutchman needs to make some changes to the squad. It’s a long season, and he needs to rotate his squad. He needs to freshen up to keep everyone happy.
Most importantly, he must make changes to bring variations in style and system, and work on getting the best out of his players. Barisic is an experienced player, no doubt, but he is often prone to making mistakes.
At some point, the Dutchman needs to integrate all his new players. Otherwise, it raises questions over the club’s transfer policies. It will also raise doubts over the club’s scouting network as well.
Having said that, Van Bronckhorst will be pleased to see that the side reacted well against Napoli. The performance was really good, but the result was disappointing.
