Ally McCoist reacts to Alfredo Morelos controversy in Rangers v Napoli

Ally McCoist can see why Alfredo Morelos was booked in the first half of Rangers’ 3-0 defeat to Napoli at Ibrox on Wednesday night after colliding with goalkeeper Alex Meret.

Morelos was booked after he seemed to make a genuine attempt to attack the ball as Meret scooped it up inside his own penalty area.

However, after seeing the replay, it’s clear the Colombia striker left his foot in the Napoli goalkeeper’s midriff a bit more than he probably could have.

“Aye, maybe he leaves [his boot] in a little bit. I’ve got to be brutally honest, I’d have done the same myself,” said McCoist on BT Sport 4 (14 September, 08:23pm).

McCoist added: “Morelos goes for it but I think you can’t have too many complaints about a yellow card.

“He leaves his boot in a little bit, for me.”

El Bufalo

It’s good to see Morelos playing like this, isn’t it?

He’s not out there to hurt people, he’s out there throwing his weight around, making sure defenders know he’s there, ruffling some feathers, linking up some play and scoring goals.

Unfortunately, he did everything but the latter against Napoli as he made his first start for Rangers since March due to injury and fitness issues.

Morelos needs to get back to his best because Rangers need him.

We’re in desperately bad form now having conceded 11 goals in three games and scored zero.

Antonio Colak had started the season well but his goals are drying up and he alone cannot be relied upon to get on the scoresheet this season.

We need Morelos fit and firing. Fortunately, he did show he’s able to play and able to move around the pitch well.

If he’d have played a bit more this season, he maybe would have scored in the opening minute and didn’t snatch at that one chance at the end of the first half.

In other Rangers news, Nigel Farage has demanded major action from the Gers and from Chelsea after what happened in the Champions League this week.
