Rangers to defy UEFA ban to sing National Anthem ahead of Champions League clash v Napoli

Rangers will defy UEFA’s ban and sing the National Anthem ahead of their Champions League clash against Napoli on Wednesday, according to Daily Mail journalist Mike Keegan.

He’d previously reported that UEFA had rejected requests for British clubs to play God Save the King in honour of the Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

However, Keegan now claims via his personal Twitter account (13 September) that after a period of silence, Rangers will sing the National Anthem.

Keegan said: “It’s my understanding that Rangers will defy the UEFA ban and sing the National Anthem after the period of silence tomorrow night in memory of the Queen ahead of their match with Napoli at Ibrox.”

Bold move

It’ll take some guts for Rangers to openly defy UEFA’s orders.

However, there’s surely nothing the club can do about fans singing God Save the King.

Could UEFA prove that a pre-planned National Anthem was organised by the club and carried out by the club on the night?

We fail to see how UEFA could if fans just happen to belt out the Anthem, as we’re sure they would anyway throughout the game against Napoli.

It remains to be seen how the travelling Italians will react to the tributes for the Queen, who sadly passed away last week after a record-breaking reign on the throne.

And there’s also that lot across the city with it being widely reported that games were called off last week with fears over how some would react to the Queen’s death being among the reasons why postponements happened.

At the end of the day, Rangers will do right by the Queen, as will the fans.

If UEFA want to punish the club for signing their National Anthem in a time of despair, that’s on them.

But it really won’t be a good look if they do.

In other Rangers news, this mainstay has been ruled out of the clash due to a fresh injury blow.
