Rangers early team news v Napoli: Jon McLaughlin ruled out of Champions League clash
Giovanni van Bronckhorst has confirmed goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin will miss Rangers’ Champions League showdown with Napoli at Ibrox on Wednesday night.
McLaughlin, 35, has endured an error-strewn start to the season after replacing Allan McGregor as the number one goalkeeper in Govan.
He’ll miss the clash with Napoli though, meaning we can expect McGregor, 40, to start in his place in goals.
As quoted by Rangers’ official Twitter account on Tuesday (13 September), van Bronckhorst said: “McLaughlin has picked up an injury and will not be involved.”
It’s not going to be easy for Rangers to beat Napoli.
Let’s face it, qualification to the Champions League group stages was the biggest achievement we could hope for in European football this season unless we were to match – or surpass – the success in the Europa League last term.
That was always unlikely.
It’s also going to be unlikely that we get out of a Champions League group boasting Liverpool, Napoli and Ajax – three huge clubs with huge presences in Europe and in their domestic leagues.
Our performance against Ajax last week was pathetic.
We expect to lose games in the Champions League – but we don’t expect to lose them in the manner we did at the Johan Cruyff Arena.
Napoli make their way to Ibrox on Wednesday and while many might see this as a more winnable game than the Ajax one as we’re at home, they’re still one of the strongest Italian clubs.
With McLaughlin ruled out, we’re also more hopeful of getting something.
But Napoli remain a stronger team than us and stronger than any in Scotland.
Please, just don’t let the club down in the manner you did last week, Rangers.
Van Bronckhorst’s job could be starting to hinge upon it.
In other Rangers news, this player has admitted he cried when he left Ibrox this summer.
