Dan Plumley: Rangers in power position as TV deal talks continue to drag on

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers...

Dan Plumley has insisted that Rangers are currently in the power position as the SPFL scramble to finalise a new TV deal for the upcoming years.

The Finance Expert admitted that the Bears aren’t desperate for the cash so they can push for a better deal compared to some clubs who really need that windfall.

It has been reported by the Daily Mail in the past week (5 September), that the SPFL are holding “emergency” talks after the £30million deal with Sky was thrown into doubt.

“I think the answer depends on what the value becomes in the future,” he exclusively told Ibrox News.

“It’s a calculated risk for them, but I agree there is more value to be extracted there, if you look at the rights deals around Europe, they’re in a good position.

“There is certainly an argument that they could be getting more money from that deal collectively, so I understand the position of Rangers.

“Again, the optics of that actually would be quite beneficial of that cash, so you’ve got to look at it from the collective side, I understand the power position that Rangers are in, but they are not desperate for that cash so you have to look at the other clubs in the league, it’s really tricky.”

This is starting to become a real debacle, but it makes sense for Rangers to push for a better deal, with other clubs far too quick to respond positively.

It was reported by Keith Jackson that Douglas Park was happy to agree to the terms of the TV deal if the SPFL paid his legal fees for the Cinch battle, as well as apologised to the club.

That doesn’t look to be happening with Neil Doncaster pushing ahead, so expect some big developments soon.
