Barry Ferguson urges Giovanni van Bronckhorst to try ‘something different’ at Rangers

Barry Ferguson believes Giovanni van Bronckhorst must change things for Rangers in the upcoming matches as they look to bounce back from a couple of humiliating defeats.

The Gers suffered back-to-back 4-0 defeats against Celtic and Ajax in the previous two matches.

In his latest column for the Daily Record, Ferguson was of the opinion that Van Bronckhorst should try something new to shake things up.

“If I was Gio, I would try something very different this weekend,” he wrote. “Because he desperately needs to shake things up.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if he plays John Lundtstram in a back three, goes with tried and tested in midfield, in Steve Davis, Ryan Jack and Scott Arfield and tries Alfredo Morelos and Antonio Colak as a two up top.”

Urgent

Rangers started their campaign hoping to improve on what they did in the previous season where they finished as the runners-up in the UEFA Europa League and also won the Scottish Cup.

This season started in a similar manner as they finally managed to cement their place in the Champions League’s group stage after more than 10 years.

However, the last week has been nothing short of a horror dream where the Gers suffered humiliating defeats in the Old Firm derby as well as against the Dutch club in the first fixture of Europe’s elite club competition.

Those defeats show that there is still a gulf in class between Rangers and the other big clubs, both locally as well as in Europe.

Therefore, the onus will be now on Van Bronckhorst to fix this mess by trying something new as advised by Ferguson, especially in the match against a side like Aberdeen FC whom they have not lost to since May 2017.
