Tom English blasts Rangers after their ‘dreadful’ performance v Ajax

Rangers have suffered a 4-0 loss against Ajax and Tom English has described it as a “dreadful” performance.

The Gers were outplayed and outclassed in the Champions League group stage opener in Holland, as they have now suffered back-to-back defeats with the same scoreline.

The BBC journalist suggested that Giovanni van Bronckhorst was “poor”, and Ross Wilson must take a “chunk of blame” for the poor recruitment.

“It was a dreadful performance. The players were outplayed and out-thought, the manager was poor, and Ross Wilson has to take a chunk of blame for the recruitment. They are a worse team now than they were last season. Defensively not good enough, the midfield a non-entity, and offensively not at the races,” said English on Sportsound, as relayed by BBC Website.

Spot on

It was a nothing performance. The Gers simply chased shadows.

Van Bronckhorst tried to shake things up in the second half, by shifting to a five-man defence.

It worked for a while as they restricted Ajax from scoring freely.

However, they created almost nothing. In fact, they struggled to string a few passes and the midfield was non-existent. The defence was all over the place in the first half, and Van Bronckhorst was forced to replace some of the players, including James Tavernier.

Rangers got a taste of elite football on the night, and what really frustrated everyone was the lack of fight from Van Bronckhorst’s side.

There are question marks over Rangers’ summer transfer activity. The Bears lost two key players this summer, but have they replaced enough?

Also, after securing passage to the Champions League group stages, it was expected that the Bears would add one or two quality players, but that didn’t happen.
