Keith Jackson: Allan McGregor should start in Ajax v Rangers
Keith Jackson has suggested that Allan McGregor should start for Rangers when they face Ajax in the group stages of the Champions League on Wednesday (7 September) away from home.
The Daily Record columnist wrote (5 September) that Job McLaughlin is at best a “competent understudy” but the veteran goalkeeper still remains the best.
Jackson also added that it would be “dangerous” to deliver a verdict on the Gers’ squad based on one defeat, but the signs suggest that they are going backwards.

“It’s always dangerous to read too much into one game but, that said, Celtic do appear to be kicking on to the next level while Rangers are moving backwards. There’s time for Rangers to recover but the alarm bells should be clanging,” wrote Jackson for The Daily Record.
“He should give Allan McGregor the gloves for Ajax on Wednesday night. Jon McLaughlin is a competent understudy but McGregor remains the best keeper at the club.”
Spot on
Jackson is spot on here. This has been a mixed start for the Gers.
They have done extremely well to reach the group stages of the Champions League, and they are expected to do well, at least at home.
On the other hand, they have been quite ordinary in the league, although there have been some good performances so far.
Now, losing against Celtic is one thing, getting battered is another. Celtic have looked like an immovable force in the league, and one can’t see them dropping points anytime at the moment.

Therefore, it’s safe to say that the Bhoys are kicking on to the next gear, whereas Rangers are struggling.
However, the situation can change easily. It will be interesting to see how Celtic perform in the Champions League, and whether it affects their domestic form.
Having said that the gap at the top is now five points, and it is really worrying.
