Dan Plumley: Rangers likely to dominate as SPFL eye mega new TV deal
We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers...
Dan Plumley has insisted that Rangers and Celtic could be set to dominate other clubs as the SPFL eyes a brand new deal for the TV rights.
The Finance Expert shared that the TV windfall is usually 50% equal split between clubs, with the other half being dished out based on where they finish in the league.
It has been reported by the Daily Record that a £150million deal is currently in the works for the next five seasons, working out at £30million-per-season, although that has already been called out by many as poor.

“It’s tricky to tell,” he exclusively told Ibrox News.
“The best I’ve seen and what I believe they do in Scotland is nearly half of it is split equally, and the other half is merit-based. It’s kind of tiered on where you finish and there’s some other percentage waiting, so it’s not as clear-cut as the English Premier League.
“Even within that, if any part of it is based on merit payments for finishing higher up, then Rangers would likely benefit more from that year on year based on where they finish.
“So, it won’t be massive in terms of that split, but they will be getting more than other clubs, Rangers and Celtic will dominate that because of where they are.”

With the deal in question already being called out by so many, we could see the SPFL return to the table for even more money than the £150million.
That deal would only increase the current deal by £5million-per-season, which is hardly anything when split between the 12 clubs in question.
Rangers are all-but-guaranteed to finish in the top two every single season as things stand, so with the merit-based system likely in place, you can expect that higher windfall to come with that.
