Dan Plumley: Rangers set for mega new windfall if they qualify for Champions League group stages

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers...

Dan Plumley has shared that Rangers will earn an instant £16.9million if they beat PSV Eindhoven and qualify for the Champions League group stages.

The Finance Expert has even admitted that it could be stretched to a mega £25.3million windfall in the groups alone, with adding in the potential of going further.

Bonus payments from wins, extra matches and extra corporate hospitality could lead to that figure rising higher the longer the stay in the competition goes on.

“It’s a minimum €20million [£16.9m] for just getting into the group stages,” he exclusively told Ibrox News.

“That’s linked to participation fees for the group stage, the market coefficient for the Scottish league and the TV pot. Scottish football will be quite low in that coefficient, but you would still get that fee, plus the starting fee, so a minimum of €20m.

“If you add in getting points in the group stages that bring in bonus payments, extra matches, extra corporate hospitality, I think you could realistically push that to €25-30million [£25.3m] when all is said and done. If you get out of the group, it’s potentially more.

“At the least, €20million, probably stretching to €25-30million.”

Rangers Giovanni van Bronckhorst

The Europa League was very lucrative for Rangers in the 2021-22 season, going all the way to the final covering the eventual loss of missing out on the Champions League.

Going to the Netherlands and picking up the win against PSV Eindhoven would continue the mega windfall coming into the club through European football.

The Champions League is a whole new level of riches and making sure that Celtic aren’t in that competition alone will put us way above them after our recent European exploits.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst will just want his squad concentrating on the football, but there will no doubt be eyes on this potential mega windfall from the boardroom already.

Fingers crossed.
