Rangers forward Kemar Roofe move to Sheffield Wednesday now unlikely

Kemar Roofe is unlikely to join League One giants Sheffield Wednesday as speculation around his future at Rangers continues to grow, according to Yorkshire Live journalist Dom Howson.

It had been reported by The Sun’s Alan Nixon (via his Patreon) that the Owls were eying a move for the 29-year-old striker.

However, it has been suggested by Howson on his latest Q&A on Yorkshire Live that a move to Hillsborough is unlikely, with his wages being a potential stumbling block.

Tough decision

Deciding what to do with Roofe is a tough decision for the club hierarchy after the 29-year-old saw his 2021/22 season blighted by injury, particularly near the back end of the campaign.

Despite his availability issues, Roofe played 36 times for the Gers and managed to score 16 goals in all competitions which is an impressive record from the former Leeds United man.

If he does leave Ibrox this summer then Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s squad would be left short of attacking options, with Joe Aribo already moving to Premier League side Southampton earlier in the summer.

Roofe’s attacking output will be hard to replace at Ibrox if he does depart and it is crucial that the club add another striker to their ranks if he decides to move on.

It certainly wouldn’t be the end of the world if the striker did remain at Ibrox for the upcoming 2022/23 season.

Experience and goalscoring pedigree like Roofe’s is hard to come by and the Gers could be fairly confident of getting a similar output out of him next season.

In other Rangers news, there have been some very encouraging words coming from van Bronckhorst about the contract debacle of one of the star men at Ibrox.
