Rangers must make multiple signings to replace Calvin Bassey - Barry Ferguson
Rangers replacing Calvin Bassey with just one signing was never going to be enough, according to former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson.
The Gers sold the 22-year-old defender to Ajax for a club-record fee, and have begun the process of replacing him after signing Liverpool’s Ben Davies.
However, Ferguson has revealed that replacing Bassey could not be done in one signing such is the extent of the defender’s ability and versatility but admitted :”I’m quietly excited about the way they’re going about their work in Gio’s first summer transfer window.”
Ferguson said in his Daily Record column: “Because Bassey is so versatile, one new signing was never going to be enough.
“You’re talking about a guy who could play on the left or the middle of a back three, as a left back in a traditional back four, or as a wing-back in a five.
“That’s four positions in one player.”
Replacing a star
Replacing players like Bassey are always difficult in straight transfers, and Bassey proved to be a type of player that the Gers have not had in a long time.
He had the pace of a nimble full-back but the strength of a seasoned centre-back, and was an all-purpose energetic defender, utilised by both Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Steven Gerrard before him.
Despite the club having high hopes for the defender when he joined the club from Leicester in 2020, it is hard to image that they had envisioned him becoming such a deniable success.
He made 65 appearances for the club, helped them win the Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup, and become Europa League finalists during his time at Ibrox.
However, the club have been rewarded for their excellent scouting as they have made a significant profit on the defender and are now working on replacing him.
Ben Davies will go a long way to suring up the defence, however, if the club can unearth another Bassey-like gem from shadows it would be even better.
In other Rangers news, the club are close to completing the signing of another piece of the puzzle.
