Alfredo Morelos is among the Rangers players sending their best wishes to Calvin Bassey after the defender’s move to Ajax was confirmed.

Ajax announced on Wednesday (20 July) that Bassey, 22, has joined them for a fee worth an initial £19.5million (€23million), rising to £22.5million (€26.5million) due to add-ons.

Later that day, Bassey took to his Instagram account to thank Rangers, his teammates and fans for his experience in Glasgow.

Borna Barisic and Steven Davis were among those sending their best wishes to Bassey while Morelos posted a simple, four-word message saying: “Good luck, my brother.”

Who’s cutting onions?

We’re going to miss Bassey.

Although he spent most of his spell at Ibrox as a back-up player, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s squad is weakened without him because he was superb last season.

If you go back to this time last year, many expected that Barisic would be the starting left-back with Connor Goldson joined by either Filip Helander or Leon Balogun at centre-back.

Nobody expected that by the end of the campaign, Bassey would be the first-choice left-back and left-sided centre-back.

Van Bronckhorst enjoyed great success by starting Bassey, especially at centre-back as he impressed in the run to the Europa League final, the defeat to Frankfurt in Seville and in the Scottish Cup final.

Ajax have got themselves a great player but the Gers have also bagged themselves a great deal and Ross Wilson deserves a lot of credit for getting the money he has got for Bassey, Nathan Patterson and Joe Aribo this year.

Rangers need to start using that money wisely to improve the squad now.

That won’t be easy, unfortunately, but we have a lot of faith in Wilson to do what’s right after these deals he’s struck.

In other Rangers news, an official partner of the Gers has dubbed their business “outrageous” with a £50million transfer verdict dropped.
