View: How does new Rangers signing Ben Davies compare to his team mates?
Rangers have completed the signing of centre-back Ben Davies from Liverpool but does he compare to his new defensive teammates?
The defender signed a four-year deal at Ibrox, after joining Liverpool in 2021 from Preston North End.
Last season the defender had a successful loan spell at Sheffield United where he played 23 times for the Blades as they came close to achieving promotion, falling short in the playoffs.
How does Davies compare to his new defensive teammates and what sort of competition will he provide?
The 26-year-old brings a wealth of experience, with his 255 career appearances only being topped by Conor Goldson, with Goldson playing 1899 more career minutes than the new Rangers centre-back. [FBRef]
Davies is not much of a goal-scoring defender, with Goldson, John Souttar, and Filip Helander all scoring more than Davies’ four career goals. [FBRef]
The former Preston defender also pales in comparison to Goldson in the number of career assists, with Goldson having 2.5 times more assists than his new defensive partner. [FBRef]
However, Davies is much more of a disciplined defender, being issued a yellow card every 8.5 games compared to Goldson’s 6.6 games, Helander’s 6.8 games, and Souttar’s 6.4 games. [FBRef]
He also has a much better interception rate than his defensive competition with 183 career interceptions, a number 1.9 times higher than James Sands’ total career interceptions, 3.4 times higher than Connor Goldson’s total career interceptions, and 5.7 times higher than John Souttar’s total career interceptions. Davies may be a different style of defender compared to their current options at centre-back but he brings experience and calmness to Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s back line and is a very smart acquisition from the Gers.
In other Rangers news, Glen Kamara is reportedly being targeted by Galatasaray in an £8m deal.
