Rangers finalising £4m deal for Liverpool ace Ben Davies to replace Calvin Bassey - Fabrizio Romano
Rangers are finalising a £4m deal for Liverpool defender Ben Davies as Calvin Bassey prepares to join Ajax, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side have moved quickly to tie up a deal for the former Preston defender who joined Liverpool in January 2020 after strong links to Celtic, but never played a first-team game for the club.
A medical is set for the next few days with the clubs very close to an agreement [John Percy, Telegraph, July 17] that would see the 26-year-old move to Ibrox, as Bassey gets set for his move to Ajax in a club-record £23m deal including add-ons [The Athletic, July 16].
Bassey is a huge loss to this Rangers side with his power, pace and hunger going alongside his versatility at both left-back and centre-back.
But Van Bronckhorst has identified Davies as a replacement for him and with his primary position being at centre-back that suggests that Borna Barisic will get the chance to prove himself as the first-choice left-back going forward.
Davies is very comfortable on the ball, but aerially he isn’t the strongest and having played no football in the last 18 months that should be a concern.
But the fact Liverpool signed him to begin with shows he has talent and during his last campaign in the Championship he was one of the better defenders in the league and was being linked to Celtic.
Now Rangers have him and he will be competing for a starting spot alongside Connor Goldson, John Souttar and Filip Helander in a cut-price deal that will see the club bank a huge chunk of Bassey’s fee for further investment elsewhere.
