Calvin Bassey lands in Amsterdam for Ajax medical ahead of Rangers exit - Fabrizio Romano

Calvin Bassey has landed in Amsterdam for a medical ahead of his club-record transfer from Rangers to Ajax, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Nigerian international had a brilliant season in 2021/22 and attracted the attention of several clubs across Europe, but it’s the Dutch champions who have agreed a deal worth around £25m in total plus a 10% sell-on clause with Rangers.

Now the 22-year-old has arrived with his agents to undergo a medical test before putting pen to paper on a four-year deal with the option of a fifth year, with the reliable Romano calling it a “done deal” via his personal Twitter account.

While the financial windfall from this deal is absolutely huge for Rangers, it can’t be seen as anything but a huge blow for the first-team ahead of the new season.

Bassey emerged as a key player for Van Bronckhorst at both centre-back and left-back and his potential for further improvement meant he could have gone down as a legend at Ibrox.

But the opportunity for regular first-team football at a club that regularly plays in the Champions League and challenges for trophies is one he couldn’t pass up and Rangers are right not to stand in his way.

They’ve agreed a phenomenal deal which has the potential to be the biggest in the history of Scottish football, and now they’ll be able to further bolster the squad in other areas with the cash brought in.

Rangers are a massive club and of course they’ll bounce back from this, but it’ll be a huge case of “what if” for fans wondering just how good this team could have been with him being part of it.
