Serie A and Bundesliga clubs enter race for Rangers star Calvin Bassey - Sky Sports
Rangers star Calvin Bassey is open to an exit from the club despite being settled, as European clubs begin to circle according to Sky Sports.
The 22-year-old Nigerian defender has emerged as one of the most in-demand players during the transfer market, with the Ibrox club demanding a Scottish-record fee to let him leave.
After reports emerged of interest from Premier League club Brighton and Eredivisie champions Ajax this week, with offers rejected [Daily Mail, July 14], Sky Sports now claim [July 15] that there is also interest from Italy and Germany.
Sky also say that while Bassey is happy and settled at Ibrox, he would be open to further talks with both Ajax and Brighton about a potential exit.
Rangers will be demanding a fee in excess of the Scottish record £25m that Celtic got for Kieran Tierney when he left for Arsenal in 2020.
After handfuls of speculation at the start of the summer window, it seemed to quieten down and that Bassey would now ultimately be staying at Ibrox this summer.
But it seems in the world of transfer dominos, another one has fallen and the butterfly effect has seen Rangers hit by the possibility of their best defender getting taken away from them.
£25m would be an enormous amount of money for the club and would literally be an offer they couldn’t refuse, and the way the window has gone so far the board and club could be trusted to get business done to replace him adequately.
However the intention is to build a top squad to wrestle the title back from Celtic and make a push in Europe once again, and they have a far better chance of doing that with Bassey in the squad.
As one famous Glaswegian once said, it’s squeaky bum time now and some major decisions will need to be made in the near future.
In other Rangers news, a decision has been made on the future of starlet Josh McPake
