Ajax close in on agreement to sign Rangers ace Calvin Bassey with five-year deal ready

Ajax have reportedly won the race to sign Rangers defender Calvin Bassey with an agreement said to be very close.

According to ESPN Netherlands, the Champions League club have a five-year deal on the table for the Nigerian keen on moving to Ajax.

The two sides are close to agreeing on a transfer fee as well with Gers holding out for £21.3million while the Eredivise champions are prepared to offer £17million as things stand.

Bassey has already spoken to new manager Alfred Schreuder and is keen on moving to the Netherlands and play in Europe’s elite club competition – something which Gers have to qualify for in the coming weeks.

Exit sealed?

It’s hard to deny players their move especially when it’s teams in the Champions League and those willing to match the club’s asking price.

Rangers would’ve loved to keep Bassey on for another season but they knew that after the campaign he had, there was going to be some interest in his services.

Barring Ajax, even Brighton were said to be keen on signing him, but their interest does not seem to be as advanced as the Dutch champions.

The 22-year-old is now expected to leave Ibrox in a big-money move and sign a staggering five-year contract at the Amsterdam based club.

He was even left out of the friendly against Blackpool and things appear to have progressed very quickly.

At this stage, it’s unlikely to be called off and Rangers now need to be prepared to use the money and sign a quality replacement for the outgoing Nigerian.

In other Rangers news, Celtic and the Gers are at loggerheads over a record-breaking SPFL midfielder and a bid for him has already been tabled.
