Rangers hold 'formal discussions' with Ajax over Calvin Bassey transfer

Rangers and Ajax have begun ‘formal discussions’ over the potential transfer of 22-year-old defender Calvin Bassey according to Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor.

It was revealed by The Daily Mail (14 July) that Ajax and Premier League side Brighton were both interested in the Nigerian international.

However, it appears the Dutch side have now stepped up their pursuit of the defender after Taylor suggested on Friday 15 July (via Twitter) that Ajax have now firmed up their interest in Bassey.

The Gers defender is entering the final two year of his current deal and is rumoured to be available at £25million.

Bound to happen

If Rangers fans honestly thought that the whole summer would pass without any concrete interest in Bassey then they were lying to themselves.

With Ajax set to receive a £46.7million fee from Manchester United for defender Lisandro Martínez, the Eredivisie giants now look in a strong place to really push on in their pursuit of Bassey.

Rangers should really consider letting the defender leave Ibrox if the right money comes in for the defender.

The Gers could well secure £25million for Bassey and that would be superb business.

Bassey has had one breakthrough season and is entering the final two years of his contract.

For a player in his position to be worth £25million is unheard of.

If the Gers do sell Bassey this summer then the club hierarchy should seriously invest back into Giovanni van Bronckhorsts squad.

£25million would continue the Gers excellent upward momentum from the 2021/22 season and make them compete with Celtic on a domestic level once again.
