Brighton make Rangers defender Calvin Bassey number one priority

Brighton have made Rangers defender Calvin Bassey their number one target as the Seagulls tussle with Ajax for the 22-year-old defender according to The Daily Record.

According to The Daily Mail, both clubs are said to have made offers for the Nigerian international who is valued at £25million be the Gers.

However, Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor suggested on Twitter (14 July) that Ajax are going to “test water” when Lisandro Martínez’s move to Manchester United is complete.

The Daily Record has since claimed on Friday 15 July that the defender is Brighton’s “number one” target and that a bidding ware could well materialise for the defender.

Cash in

Bassey without a doubt would benefit from another season at Ibrox under the stewardship of Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

However, when £25million is thrown about for a player who is in the final two years of his contract then the Gers simply have to sell him this summer.

Luckily for Rangers, the two main contenders for his signature could well have significant transfer fees coming their way.

Martinez is set to complete a £46.6million move for Manchester United, whilst Brighton are asking for in excess of £50million for 23-year-old defender Marc Cucurella with Manchester City interested.

Bassey will be extremely difficult for Rangers to replace but a £25million fee would certainly help the Gers in their attempts to reinvest in their squad ahead of the new campaign.

The Nigerian international’s value will only decline from now until next summer and to put it simply, Rangers cannot afford to lose the defender for a cut-price deal next summer.

Let’s all hope a bidding war between Ajax and Brighton does materialise.
