Ajax ready to push for Rangers defender Calvin Bassey once Lisandro Martínez deal is finalised

Ajax will be ready to make a move for Rangers defender Calvin Bassey after Lisandro Martinez’s move to Manchester United has been finalised according to Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor.

It has been revealed by The Daily Mail on Thursday (14 July) that Ajax and Brighton have both tabled offers for the Nigerian international.

However, Sky Sports journalist Jim White suggested (via Twitter, 14 July) that any talk of an Ajax bid for the 22-year-old is “premature”.

Taylor suggested on Thursday evening (14 July) on his personal Twitter that Ajax will “test [the] water” for Bassey once Martinez’s £46.6million deal switch to Manchester United is complete.

Big worry

This will most likely be the beginning of the end for Bassey in a Rangers shirt.

Ajax are set to receive a significant amount of money from Manchester United and it will undoubtedly help them in their hopes of luring the 22-year-old away from Ibrox.

The Gers have always stood firm over their £25million valuation of the defender.

However, surely that is likely to be met this summer by either the Dutch giants or a Premier League club.

Letting Bassey leave the club is a tough decision for Rangers fans to take but financially it does make sense for the Ibrox hierarchy.

The defender is entering the final two years of his current deal and the Gers will be desperate to avoid another Joe Aribo situation next summer.

If Rangers do decide to do a deal with Ajax then they must make sure they stick to their asking price with the well-documented Martinez cash injection set to arrive in Amsterdam.

It will be hard to take for the Ibrox faithful, but a move to the Dutch giants would be a superb one for Bassey and his future progress.

Ajax are known for nurturing and developing younger players and that would be no different for the Rangers man.

Seeing the Dutch side make a move for the defender in the future would not be a surprise in the slightest.
