Rangers: Cole McKinnon joins Partick Thistle on season-long loan deal

Rangers youngster Cole McKinnon has completed a loan move to Scottish Championship side Partick Thistle for the 2022/23 campaign.

The Gers have inserted a January recall option into the loan agreement with the Glasgow club.

Rangers B & Academy Twitter account confirmed the midfielder’s switch on Wednesday 13 July.

The Scotland under-19 international has featured for Gers first team and was on the bench for their Europa League semi-final first leg defeat to RB Leipzig.

Highly rated

It is clear the midfielder is extremely highly rated by Rangers after being included in the Europa League semi-final squad in Germany.

However, the 19-year-old must go out on loan to gain regular football and first-team experience away from Ibrox.

The fact that the Gers have included a recall clause into the agreement with Partick Thistle means that they could introduce him into the first team if he excels whilst with the Scottish Championship side.

Too often Rangers’ youth talents aren’t given first-team chances or loaned out far too often as they enter their early 20s.

If McKinnon performs well whilst out on loan then he must be given a fair shot in Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s first team plans, not just the odd 15-minute substitute cameo.

For now, it will be intriguing to see how the youngster fairs whilst out on loan in the Scottish second tier.

McKinnon must display he has the physical attributes to cope with first-team football whilst also showing that he is above the level in the Scottish Championship.

The youngster will be hoping his recall option is utilised off the back of a good first half of the 2022/23 season.
