Rangers to sell Joe Aribo to Southampton for £6m + add ons - Fabrizio Romano
Joe Aribo is close to leaving Rangers for Southampton in a deal worth £6m plus add-ons, according to reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The Nigerian international has entered the final 12 months of his deal at Ibrox and has “refused” to sign a new deal, meaning the club have agreed to sell him rather than lose him for free next summer.
With a £10m release clause in his contract the club were adamant they wouldn’t sell for below that value, but Romano has shared on his personal Twitter account that the value will be met with add-ons after incoming director Joe Shields made a move.
Even though Rangers are likely to get his full £10m value in a deal for Aribo, not getting the full release clause up front is a big blow for the club.
Aribo is worth way more than that, but the club were backed into a corner by the clause in his contract and the fact he has just 12 months remaining on his deal.
But getting just 60% of the clause up front is certainly a bummer, considering the club need funds to be able to strengthen the squad elsewhere and bring in a replacement for the 25-year-old.
The Premier League clubs that are interested are more than capable of paying up an eight-figure sum for the player, and it feels as though Rangers have sold themselves short in negotiations.
The player will leave and Southampton will be getting a brilliant player, but Rangers will be getting just peanuts for one of their best stars.
In other Rangers news, a “total agreement” has been reached between clubs for the first major signing of the summer
