Joe Aribo refusing to sign new Rangers contract, Southampton interested

Southampton are interested in signing Rangers midfielder Joe Aribo, who is refusing to sign a new contract with the club according to talkSPORT.

The Nigeria international has entered the final 12 months of his deal at Ibrox after scoring nine goals and registering nine assists in 49 appearances for the club in the 2021/22 season.

But as interest continues to mount in the 25-year-old attacking midfielder, Southampton have emerged as the latest club to show interest in taking him to England.

Rangers have been keen to keep Aribo at the club after he established himself as a key member of Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side after the Dutch coach took over from Steven Gerrard.

Now talkSPORT are claiming that he has refused to sign a new contract, putting more pressure on the club to sell him and get some cash in or risk losing him for free next summer when his deal expires.

After everything that Rangers have done for Aribo since bringing him over from Charlton, the least he can do is stay respectful while he’s employed here.

If he doesn’t want to sign a new deal that’s fair enough and he is entitled to leave for free next summer if that’s the route he chooses to take.

However it makes Rangers’ negotiating position much harder to sell him if clubs know that he has no interest in sticking around, and means it’s harder for Mr. Wilson upstairs to get a fair deal.

There has been suggestions of a £10m release clause, which does make it easier for the club, but it’s a real shame that he doesn’t want to add to this really successful spell at the club currently.

Ultimately if he leaves he’ll be remembered mostly for his goal in Seville in the Europa League final, but it’ll be a big case of what could’ve been if he’d stayed more than anything else.

In other Rangers news, Aribo’s reps are set for talks with a different Premier League club this week
