Rangers set to agree £10m plus deal with Southampton for Joe Aribo
Southampton are set to agree a £10million plus add-ons deal with Rangers for 25-year-old Nigerian international Joe Aribo, according to talkSPORT.
The Athletic reported (5 July) that the two clubs were in talks and that Aribo was “keen” on a move to the Saints.
It now appears that a deal is close with talkSPORT reporting on Tuesday 5 July that the Saints are now closing in on the Rangers man with his Ibrox exit imminent.
Aribo has been superb for Rangers since his move from Charlton but ultimately his contract situation has meant the club hierarchy have had their hands tied.
They couldn’t risk losing the Nigerian international for free next summer and £10million for a player in the last year of his contract is not bad business from the Gers.
The Ibrox faithful won’t begrudge Aribo a move to the Premier League with the 25-year-old needing to test himself at the highest level possible before his career is over.
It is absolutely essential that Giovanni van Bronckhorst reinvests into his squad to make Rangers competitive across all competitions next season.
There could still be further departures at Ibrox with Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos both out of contract in the summer of 2023.
Rangers must ensure that they don’t lose any of their star men for free next summer.
The sad reality for Rangers is that cannot compete financially with even the lesser Premier League teams in terms of wages and that will most likely always be the case.
This is a tough one to take for Gers fans but it’s certainly a good move for all parties.
In other Rangers news, contract talks with a key player have hit a new impasse with a summer exit now on the cards.
