Keith Jackson: Rangers in ‘impossible position’ regarding future of star trio

Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst will have a big task of sorting out the future of three stars on his first day back at Auchenhowie, according to Daily Record columnist Keith Jackson.

The Gers’ pre-season is set to get underway with the manager returning to the office on Monday [27 June].

Jackson, in his latest column for Daily Record, published on page 46 of the print edition, suggested that the 47-year-old’s first task would be to sort out the future of star trio Ryan Kent, Joe Aribo and Alfredo Morelos, all of whom are entering in the final year of their contracts.

“The first thing on his to-do list ought to be organising sit-downs with three key players while asking sporting director Ross Wilson to pull up a chair at the same meeting,” he wrote.

“By allowing Kent, Aribo and Morales to enter the final year of their contracts, Wilson has placed Van Bronckhorst in an almost impossible position at the start of his first full season in charge.

“Somehow the Dutchman has to persuade this trio to put pen to paper on extension at the 11th hour. Or he has to start preparing for life without them.”

Worrying times

The development regarding the trios will definitely be a cause of concern amongst the Rangers fans who would be dreading the possibility of going into the new campaign without three of their star players leaving without having any suitable replacements in place.

All three players had a key role to play in the Rangers’ success in the previous campaign where they not only finished second on the league table but also won the Scottish Cup and qualified for the final of the Europa League where they were defeated by Eintracht Frankfurt on penalties.

Last season, Kent represented Rangers in 46 matches across all competitions, scoring three goals and providing 20 assists.

Aribo, on the other hand, played 57 matches for the Gers where he managed to score nine times and provided 10 assists.

Morales represented the Scottish side in 42 matches across all competitions where he managed to score 19 goals and provided eight assists in the process [Transfermarkt].

In other Rangers news, contract talks with a key player have hit a new impasse with a summer exit now on the cards.
