Sunderland striker Ross Stewart number one target for Rangers as Alfredo Morelos backup – report

Rangers have made Sunderland striker Ross Stewart their number one choice to replace Alfredo Morelos if needed, according to the Northern Echo.

The Gers have been in the market to sign a player to strengthen the attacking front ahead of the next campaign.

One of the areas of concern for Rangers is the future of star striker Morelos at the club who has just one year left on his current deal.

The report stated that manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst believes that the Sunderland striker would be a perfect replacement for the Colombia striker and he is now the Gers’ number one target to strengthen the attacking unit.

Worthy Striker Replacement

Morelos was the club’s leading goal scorer in the recently concluded season with 11 goals in the Scottish league [Transfermarkt].

Therefore, Van Bronckhorst must understand the kind of attacking player he is trying to experiment with.

If he will leave, Stewart looks like a perfect replacement for him. The 24-year-old was one of the standout players in League One in the recently concluded season, scoring 24 goals and providing five assists in 46 games [Transfermarkt].

Rangers have been threatened with a partial stadium closure by UEFA

The Scottish striker has played 98% of the minutes for the Black Cats and contributed to 37% of their goals in the league competition and would surely not demand more than £33,000 Morelos is understood to earn.

Due to his performances in the domestic competitions, the Sunderland striker is expected to receive his first international cap for Scotland in the match against Armenia on June 14.

As Rangers want to close the gap on Celtic next season in the Scottish league, they cannot be doing that with a striker whose future is in doubt. Therefore, the signing of Stewart is necessary.
