Rangers legend Allan McGregor must leave with pride after latest report

Rangers legend Allan McGregor must leave Ibrox this summer at the risk of tarnishing his career after the latest Sky Sports report.

The report said on 8 June that Jon McLaughlin is expected to be Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s number one next season amid the 40-year-old’s uncertain future.

McGregor is out of contract with the Light Blues in the summer after being with the club since the youth level.

During that time the shot-stopper won 13 major honours as well as Player of the Year for the 2020/21 campaign.

The Scot has been a brilliant servant for the club and it is hard to imagine a world where he isn’t playing for the Bears but it the time has come for him to hang up his boots and he can do it with his head held high.

Right choice.

The stalwart would surely much rather leave now coming off the back of a brilliant European run as well as lifting the Scottish Cup, despite not starting the final.

It might not have been the ultimate fairy-tale story that McGregor and everyone else would have wished for as the Bears lost to Eintracht Frankfurt on penalties in the final but leaving now is a hell of a lot better than limping out as the number two and barely featuring in the 2022/23 season.

Can you imagine if he would have made the Europa League-winning penalty save in the final to lift the Gers the trophy in his penultimate game? Especially after missing out on the final through injury in 2008.

Of course, nothing is certain yet but McGregor simply can’t risk tarnishing his Rangers career by ending it with a whimper. He is a legend and he must leave on a high.
