Alex McLeish sends Rangers 'huge' contract warning for several key men

Alex McLeish has urged Rangers to act sooner rather than later on the players in the squad whose contracts are expiring at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

Star trio Joe Aribo, Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos will all become free agents next summer as things stand.

To avoid a mass exodus of key players leaving for free, the BBC pundit believes the Light Blues should look to extend their contracts.

McLeish said, as per Daily Record: “It’s a huge decision and it would be really tough to take if they left for nothing next year.

“It was like me at the end of that season, losing seven or eight players and you’ve got a month to go before pre-season training starts and you are trying to regenerate the squad.

“You end up with free transfers coming in. Guys who have been great players but are maybe not at the peak of their careers anymore.

“That’s hugely difficult, and as I say, that’s when the recruitment has to be great because the budget was downsizing and at Rangers, you still have to play and be at a level the fans expect.

“A lot of Rangers players have been touted for big, big money and would fill the coffers up greatly. But can you get a replacement?

“I would definitely be trying to get them to extend because it will take so much money to replace them with similar quality.”

If the likes of Aribo, Kent and Morelos were to leave the Gers next summer for absolutely nothing, it would be a complete disaster.

Not only would that leave a gaping hole in the squad, but the Bears would also have to pay serious money to find replacements that are good enough to replace three Giovanni van Bronckhorst favourites.

They simply can’t be allowed to leave on free’s – that is terrible business from the club.

There is no doubt the trio are among the best players in the squad and Rangers must do everything in their power to keep them – whether that is this summer or next.

As McLeish says, they would be very expensive to replace and even then, there is no guarantee at all that the players coming in will come in and make the same impact.

Strengthening the squad is important over the summer but resolving the futures of the current players in it is even more important because nobody will want to go to a team on the decline.
