BBC pundit: Rangers on verge of agreeing new contract with Steven Davis

Steven Davis is “close” to signing a new contract with Rangers, according to BBC Sportscene pundit Kenny Miller.

Davis, 37, is currently set to leave Ibrox at the end of the month when his existing contract expires.

Ex-Ibrox striker Miller believes there’s going to be a big summer in Govan and wants it to start with the Gers agreeing new deals with both Davis and goalkeeper Allan McGregor.

“Everyone is talking about how big the rebuilding job will be for Gio van Bronckhorst at Rangers this summer,” Miller told The Sunday Mail on 29 May (print edition, page 65).

“But there’s too many questions to be answered ay Ibrox to know for sure.

“What’s happening with Connor Goldson?

“We still don’t know for definite. That has to be sorted in the next couple of weeks.

“It looks like Steven Davis is close to agreeing a new deal but what about Allan McGregor?

“I’ve already said in MailSport how important it is for the club to keep these guys.

“Until Greegsy feels he can’t be Rangers No.1, I’d urge him to stay.

“I don’t think you can replace him and I’d be fighting to keep him.

“Davo came off the bench in a European Final last weekend and made a hell of a difference with his composure and decision making.”

Why?

It’s time for some hard truths.

Rangers went backwards in the league this season.

Why is that? It’s because Ross Wilson and Steven Gerrard didn’t really do anything to make the squad better last summer.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst did what he could in January to add some quality in but he was never going to move key players on halfway through a season.

Now is the time for Rangers to freshen up their squad, add some quality and move on some of the ageing players who haven’t contributed enough.

Rangers

Davis played 33 times in all competitions this season with only 13 of them being starts in the Scottish Premiership.

He dropped down the pecking order for van Bronckhorst and rightly so.

Ryan Jack, Glen Kamara, John Lundstram, Scott Arfield and Aaron Ramsey were all rightly ahead of him in the pecking order in the midfield.

We shouldn’t be keeping players who’ve fallen down the pecking order because Davis will end up just being a squad player yet again next season.

Move on players like him and bring in fresh players who’ll compete for a spot in the starting line-up.

Yes, it’ll be great to have Davis’ experience in the squad but you can do that by giving him a backroom role.

If Davis does sign a new contract, it shouldn’t change any transfer plans because he’s still going to be down the pecking order.
