Rangers news: Ex-SFA official reacts as Sky Sports share £25m Calvin Bassey reveal

Former SFA referee Des Roache has told Calvin Bassey to stay put at Rangers for another season with the defender linked with a move to the Premier League.

Bassey, 22, has enjoyed a tremendous season at Ibrox and according to Sky Sports, he’s now been valued at £25million by the Light Blues amid interest from Aston Villa and other clubs in the Premier League and Bundesliga.

However, ex-official Roache feels that £25million is too much for the ex-Leicester defender, who he feels should spend another season in Scotland before bagging a bigger move next year.

“Bassey is a great player, no doubt about that,” said Roache via his personal Twitter account on Friday (27 May).

“However I don’t believe he is a £25million player after a good six months.

“Stay at Rangers, have a great full season and then let the big offers come from the top-six in England.”

Why don’t they understand?

Ever since that £25million figure was revealed, we’ve heard it all from those outside of Ibrox moaning that Bassey isn’t worth that much.

We don’t understand how it’s so hard for some people to wrap their head around transfer valuations.

Rangers don’t want to sell Bassey.

As a result, they’ve put a very big price tag on his head to hopefully stop clubs from making an effort to sign him.

And then, if they do meet that price, it’s a win for the Gers because they’ll be pocketing the joint-biggest fee Scottish football has ever seen.

Bassey is only worth what a club thinks he’s worth.

We’ll all have different opinions on what each player’s worth. For example, we think Bassey should be valued at far more than £25million after the season he’s had.

It’s absolutely pointless telling Rangers Football Club what they should value their own players because it only matters what the club thinks.

Aston Villa have spent a stupid amount of money on transfers in recent years and don’t even have a top-half Premier League finish to their name since the 2010/11 season.

We wouldn’t put it past them go over the top again so the Gers are well within their rights to demand top dollar.t

In other Rangers news, the Gers are battling Celtic to sign a player who Wayne Rooney says is “excellent”.
