Barry Ferguson outlines ‘big summer’ for Rangers ahead of rebuild

Barry Ferguson has outlined a “big summer” for Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst as he looks to stamp his mark on the squad.

The Light Blues are set to undergo a rebuild as they look to build on last season’s cup glory as well as bring the title back to Ibrox having missed out to Celtic last campaign.

Despite an underwhelming January transfer window, Ferguson has every confidence the Dutchman can strengthen the squad over the summer.

He said as per Daily Record: “It’s going to be a big summer for the Rangers gaffer as he starts to piece together a squad capable of wrestling the title back from Parkhead.

“But from what I’ve seen so far, I really do have faith in van Bronckhorst’s judgement to get it right.

“There’s no doubt there’s going to have to be some sort of rebuild given the contract situation with a host of players.

“But I’m sure Gio has identified where the areas he wants to strengthen and the players he’d like to bring in.

“For me, I think we can forgive him the January window because he’d only been in the job a few weeks and you imagine most of the work done on those deals were in place well before he stepped foot back in Scotland after so many years away.

“The moves for James Sands, Amad Diallo and Aaron Ramsey didn’t have the desired effect and none of them made much of an impact.”

Rebuild.

The January transfer window looked to be so promising ahead of the second half of last season.

Aaron Ramsey was tipped to be the next best thing since Paul Gascoigne was at the club, Amad Diallo scored a few minutes into his debut and James Sands is a player with masses of potential.

Unfortunately, it didn’t quite work out for Ramsey and Diallo who will most likely be glad to see that back of Ibrox. Sands still has another year left to test his metal and hopefully, he fares better than the other two.

Past failures are what need to be taken into account this summer ahead of a crucial window.

The Light Blues have vital ground to make up on their Glaswegian rivals Celtic and bettering not only the quality of the players but the quantity of them will be huge as they look to push on all fronts again.
