Chris Sutton aims Celtic dig as he predicts winner in Rangers v Frankfurt Europa League final

Chris Sutton couldn’t help but aim a dig at Rangers after their Europa League semi-final victory over RB Leipzig.

The Light Blues will face Frankfurt in the final in Seville later this month and the winner of that will qualify for the Champions League next season.

But Sutton was quick to point out that the Gers could have qualified for the Champions League via the Scottish Premiership this season, which he says Celtic are set to win.

Sutton does, however, admit that Rangers’ fans have been superb in Europe this season and predicts Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men to win against Frankfurt in the final.

“Both great sets of fans, it will be [a great atmosphere],” said Sutton on BT Sport’s Europa League Highlights show on Thursday night [5 May]. “And when you think Rangers have already knocked out two German sides in Dortmund and Leipzig, this is the easiest task Rangers will possibly have.

“Rangers are not going to win the Scottish league by the looks of it so they will need to win it for automatic entry to the Champions League.

“I fancy Rangers strongly, they have come so far and I think van Bronckhorst is tactically really astute. I think Rangers will win.”

Mammoth task

Many – including Sutton – will point to the fact that Rangers have beaten Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig this season when predicting them to beat Frankfurt in the final.

Dortmund are second in the German Bundesliga while Leipzig are fifth.

Frankfurt are 11th.

However, the historic German club has knocked Barcelona, West Ham and Real Betis out of the Europa League this season – three teams who would no doubt be a huge test for the Gers.

And it’s a one-off game too in Seville.

Rangers won’t be able to rely on a night under the lights at Ibrox to get through a two-legged tie while at the same time, Frankfurt won’t have their famous backing in Germany either.

It’s very difficult to call and in all honesty, it’s probably two very evenly-matched teams going up against one another.

Obviously, we’re going to back the Gers to win but this promises to be a very cagey affair.

Let’s hope the Light Blues can do it.

We believe they can.

In other Rangers news, this Ibrox employee is being lined up for a big job by a Scottish club.
