Borna Barisic cannot afford another Rangers shocker, £2m missed out on by stubborn Gers
Borna Barisic cannot afford to have another shocker Rangers in a big game after terrible performances in back-to-back Old Firm starts.
Barisic, 29, has shown an improvement in his form in recent weeks after being axed by Giovanni van Bronckhorst as a result of his first-half nightmare at Celtic Park on 2 February.
However, the Croatian left-back was back to his worst last week when he was yet again responsible for losing a goal against Celtic.
Barisic has had a very poor season by his standards and it’s become increasingly baffling as to why the Gers rejected a reported offer of £2million for him in January.
The Sun reported on 4 January that Watford had a bid turned down for the former Osijek left-back with Rangers demanding £5million for him.
Barisic still has over two years left on his contract at Ibrox but his performances this season haven’t been anywhere near that of a £5million player and based on what we’ve seen, that £2million offer wasn’t far off his actual worth.
Calvin Bassey is easily the best left-back option but van Bronckhorst has had to play him in the middle of the defence due to continual injury and selection problems regarding Leon Balogun and Filip Helander.
As Barisic is 29-years-old, going to be in the last two years of his contract and has shown that he can attract transfer interest from England, it might make sense to get rid of him this summer – especially if he has another shocker for the Gers tonight.
Rangers welcome RB Leipzig to Ibrox for the second leg of their Europa League semi-final on Thursday [5 May].
Barisic’s performances in his last few big matches have been atrocious.
If he has another, he simply must be bombed out of Ibrox by Ross Wilson and van Bronckhorst.
