Michael Stewart slams Calvin Bassey performance as Rangers draw 1-1 v Celtic
Michael Stewart slammed Calvin Bassey as he felt the Rangers defender struggled in the 1-1 draw at Celtic on Sunday.
Bassey, 22, has been one of the brightest players this season for the Light Blues but the Nigerian failed to impress ex-Hearts man Stewart in his performance away at Parkhead.
One moment saw Kyogo Furuhashi get past Bassey and get in on goal before the Japan forward moved into an offside position.
“It’s Kyogo that’s offside,” said Stewart on BBC Sportscene on Sunday night [1 May, 07:21pm].
“It’s dangerous play from Calvin Bassey, he’s trying to step up.”
After that heart-in-mouth moment, Stewart ripped into Bassey again for failing to close down Jota.
“It’s more poor play from Calvin Bassey, that’s a wonderful ball in from Jota and [Daizen] Maeda should be doing better.
“He just panics and is scared of the challenge from Allan McGregor.”
Give it a rest
Bassey managed to play Furuhashi offside so we’re not sure why Stewart is having a moan about the defender on that occasion.
But for the second one, when Bassey failed to stop Jota’s ball into the box, it was poor play by him and he should have made more of an effort to close the Celtic player down.
Stewart loves to criticise the Gers players, doesn’t he?
Bassey didn’t have a bad game at all against Celtic – he had a very good game if anything.
Rangers were the better team on the balance of play but the Celtic goal really came down to Borna Barisic – yet again – switching off.
We don’t remember a player in recent years who’s been as consistently dreadful as Barisic has been at Celtic Park.
Bassey is by far the best left-back we have at Ibrox and it’s a shame he has to play at centre-back due to injury and suspension issues.
