Tom English brands Rangers 'outstanding' despite RB Leipzig defeat
Tom English has gushed over the ‘outstanding’ Rangers defensive display in their Europa League defeat against RB Leipzig last night.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side kept the hosts at bay until the 85th minute when defender Angelino scored the decisive goal at the Red Bull Arena.
The Light Blues will have to overturn the deficit in the second leg in Glasgow if they have any hope of reaching the final like Walter Smith’s 2008 team that English saw glimpses of last night.
He told BBC: “Defensively, I thought Rangers were outstanding. They had shades of 2008 under Walter Smith when they had that great run to the final.
“Leipzig deserved to win, but Rangers made life difficult and frustrated the hell out of them.”
All to play for.
Rangers haven’t shown that type of defensive resilience all competition and it came as a pleasant surprise seeing how organised they were last night.
All of their other knockout games have been somewhat of a goal-fest which was the biggest concern going against a very attacking Leipzig side last night but van Bronckhorst got the set-up spot on and his players executed the system brilliantly.
They will be gutted to have conceded the all-important goal with just five minutes left to play but there were many positives to take from the game.
If the Bears can match that performance in the second leg whilst bringing back Kemar Roofe or at least having more of a go in attack, they could easily win the tie.
The Gers will have to be on top of their game with the threat the Bundesliga pose all over the pitch but the Ibrox atmosphere should give them that extra boost to go on and reach the final in Seville.
