Giovanni van Bronckhorst comments on Rangers tactical switch

Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst has suggested that he could use the three-man defence system yet again in the future if the situation demands so.

Rangers usually play in the 4-3-3 system, a continuation from the Steven Gerrard era, but with slight modifications.

However, the Dutchman has made tactical tweaks when necessary, and he did that against Borussia Dortmund on Thursday where the Bears won 4-2 in Germany.

He said on Friday (18 February), as quoted by Daily Record: “We didn’t play this a lot, I think this is the second time we did it.

“We did it against Hibs away when we switched to a five defensive system.

“It’s a system I have used before and we had to do it because of the numbers Dortmund put forward.

“We needed more bodies at the back. It’s still a system we can improve on with detail, but it’s definitely one we can use if needed.”

Smart

Since that 3-0 defeat against Celtic, Rangers have won four matches on the trot, including the famous win against Dortmund on Thursday (17 February).

It’s good to see that he made such a risky tactical switch, and it worked brilliantly for him, as it gave Rangers solidity at the back.

The Dutchman himself has admitted that he will be looking to refine that system with probably taking more technical help from his coaching staff.

The Gers will face Dundee United away from home on Sunday (20 February), and Rangers are highly unlikely to use that system against them.

This system is probably more effective playing away home, and we could see Rangers implementing that in European games going forward if they progress.

However, one cannot help but wonder, why didn’t the Gers try this system effectively against Celtic at Parkhead earlier this month?

Nevertheless, the focus now shifts to the domestic league, where the Gers must not get complacent. They should play with the same intensity and pick up all three points to keep the pressure at the top.
