Michael Stewart raves about Alex Lowry display in Rangers league debut v Livingston

Michael Stewart was blown away by Alex Lowry’s stunning performance on his full Rangers debut on Wednesday night against Livingston.

Lowry, 18, burst onto the scene when he made his debut as a substitute in the Scottish Cup win over Stirling Albion last week, scoring a goal in the process.

He was then rewarded with a start in the Scottish Premiership on Wednesday and pulled the strings in a 1-0 win over Livingston at Ibrox.

Despite his lack of senior experience and tender age, ex-Hearts player Stewart was thrilled with what he saw from the young midfielder.

“You only need to watch the kid for a few minutes to realise he’s a proper football player, really intelligent, two good feet, balance and he’s always looking to make things happen,” said Stewart on BBC Sportscene on Wednesday night [26 January].

“His work- ate, he’s closing down, constantly getting himself in a position to receive the ball as well.

“There’s a dangerous ball across the face of the goal.

“For somebody so young, you look to see if he’s got the awareness to have an impact and an end-product.

“Look at the players he’s dribbling around and nothing really comes of it but that’s a wonderful ball across the face of the goal.

“I think Cedric Itten should be doing more to get on the end of that.”

What a star

Rangers fans need to keep a real close eye on Lowry because based on his first two appearances for the club, we have a real gem within out midst.

Lowry was superb when he came off the bench against Stirling.

That was against a Scottish League Two club so the jury may have still been out in some regards.

However, to make a full debut just days later in a must-win Premiership game against Livingston – who haven’t been in bad form – says a lot about the talented teenager.

But then, for him to play so well, really excites us.

Lowry played all 90 minutes and covered almost every blade of grass at Ibrox.

He’s so unfortunate to have not got an assist in that game – if Alfredo Morelos was up front instead of the woeful Itten then he would have done.

We cannot wait to see more of Lowry but Joe Aribo’s return from the Africa Cup of Nations is likely to mean he’ll be on the bench against Ross County on Saturday.

Still, we’ve seen he is capable of having an impact as a substitute.
