Wesley Hoedt rules out signing for Rangers in January
Rangers will not be signing Wesley Hoedt this month after the player laughed off reports that he could move to Glasgow in an interview with Het Nieuwsblad.
Central defender Hoedt joined Belgian outfit Anderlecht last summer from Premier League outfit Southampton and has enjoyed a terrific season under Vincent Kompany.
His performances have seen him linked with a move to Ibrox to follow fellow Dutchman Giovanni van Bronckhorst [Daily Record].
Speaking to Belgian outlet Het Nieuwsblad, the 27-year-old revealed that he had no intention of joining Rangers any time soon and even declared that he and his agent laughed when they saw the rumours.
“Together with my agent, I laughed about that message in the English media,” he said.
“The sports manager of Southampton is now in Glasgow, but he’s not going to get me, you know. Moreover, I’m doing well at Anderlecht.
“In time, I want to play Champions League here, and I’m close to the Netherlands.”
This link looks like one that was just a little bit lazy in all honesty, so the response from Hoedt isn’t a surprise.
Rangers have just completed the signing of John Souttar from Hearts on a pre-contract agreement and are keen to bring him in this month if they can, while they are also tracking Danilo Doekhi from Vitesse as a potential defensive signing.
Hoedt may well have been someone of interest, and has been described as ‘brilliant‘ in the past, but the likelihood is it never went further than a conversation where his name was brought up.
There is no need for Rangers to bring in Hoedt this month or in the summer unless something goes horribly against their plan, and Hoedt clearly would have no interest anyway.
It’s a bit of a non-starter this one, but at least Rangers fans and even the board can put this one into the archives and never look at it again now.
