Rangers locked in battle with Southampton to sign Benjamin Siegrist

Rangers are “locked” in a two-club transfer battle with Southampton for Dundee United goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist.

That’s according to the Daily Express, who report that the Swiss is highly-courted by both sides ahead of his contract expiring at the end of the season.

The 29-year-old is free to open pre-contract talks and sign his next deal this month ahead of the move in the summer.

Writing in their latest print edition today (11 January, page 56), the Express shared the latest with both clubs locked in.

“Southampton are locked in a transfer battle with Rangers over Dundee United goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist, 29, whose contract is up at the end of the season,” they wrote.

Outsiders gone?

There had been mentions of European clubs interested, but now it looks to be down to a straight shootout between this British duo.

The Scottish Daily Mail reported in their print edition yesterday (10 January, page 76) that clubs from Germany, Belgium and France were also in the race.

It looks as though things are moving quickly, and now we can presume that it is a two-horse race given how much success Siegrist has tasted in Scotland.

Siegrist will know first-hand just how successful the Bears have been in recent years having watched them jump back to dominate Scotland again.

That could have a major say in his next decision, with a move to Southampton surely just condemning him to a spot on the bench.

One major development that could stand in our way, is the recent £100million takeover of the Saints [Sky Sports].

Allan McGregor and Jon McLaughlin both have contracts running out at the end of this season, and it looks as though Ross Wilson is looking for a replacement.

Could that man be Siegrist? Looks like we’re nearing an answer.
