Alan Nixon shares ‘big hurdle’ blocking Rangers move for John Souttar in January

Alan Nixon has shared that Rangers are facing a “big hurdle” to sign Hearts defender John Souttar in January.

The Scotland international is available to sign a pre-contract now but has admitted he would leave Edinburgh immediately if a deal can be struck.

The Sun journalist, Nixon, has reported that it is now a two-club race between Sheffield United and the Bears, but neither appears to be in a position to pay a fee upfront.

Writing on his personal Twitter account, Nixon shared the latest on Souttar potentially moving to Ibrox this month.

“Yes,” he wrote. “Or if anyone else pays the fee to take him now… which seems the big hurdle.”

Hurdle?

Rangers couldn’t be better placed to seal a move for Souttar, whether now or at the end of this season.

Hearts will of course play hardball over a fee for the Scottish international should any club want to bring the deal forward.

Given that the Bears have just earned their club-record transfer fee for selling Nathan Patterson for up to £16million, it would be no issue whatsoever.

With big concerns over the future of Connor Goldson and Leon Balogun beyond this season, it would be smart to get our business done this month ready for that.

Souttar would cover that problem, and bringing in early, as we did with Scott Wright last year, would certainly help.

Hopefully, there is a big hurdle for Sheffield United, and that can be the news needed to swoop in and complete this move instantly – get it done.
