Rangers prepare pre-contract move for Benjamin Siegrist

Rangers are preparing a pre-contract move for Dundee United goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist, according to reports from The Scottish Mail.

The print edition of the newspaper (10 January; page 76) claims that a host of clubs including Southampton are keen to sign the 29-year-old, who is one of the “consistent” performers for his club.

There is interest in Siegrist from clubs in Germany, Belgium and France as well, but Rangers are preparing to make the first move.

Smart signing

Siegrist is entering the last six months of his contract at Tannadice, and he is free to speak to other interested parties.

A summer move to Ibrox is now a possibility for him, although a switch across the border to Southampton could be an exciting option as well.

The goalkeeping department is one area that Giovanni van Bronckhorst needs to address, in this window or the next.

Allan McGregor turns 40 this month, and the veteran still remains the first-choice at the club. He hasn’t decided yet whether to stay for another year at Glasgow or hang his boots up.

The Scotland international, Jon McLaughlin, is expected to replace McGregor in the long run, but he is also out of contract at Ibrox at the end of the campaign.

After only nine appearances, MacLaughlin is also yet to commit his future. So, signing a new goalkeeper is necessary, and it seems the Gers are setting up the platform over a summer move for the Dundee United goalkeeper.

In other Rangers news, an English club has opened talks to sign an ‘Outstanding’ player wanted by the Gers this month.
