Rangers-linked Summerville shines in Under-23 game, scoring a hat-trick

Giovanni van Bronckhorst is hoping to add more Dutch influence to Rangers and one particular talent has been standing out in Under-23 games.

Leeds United’s Crysencio Summerville was the star on Wednesday night as he fired in a brilliant first-half hat-trick in the Whites’ 3-3 draw against Sunderland.

The 20-year-old has been linked with a loan move across the border to Ibrox [Scottish Daily Mail print edition, 1 January, page 112] but he could still be needed in the first team by Marcelo Bielsa.

Summerville might not have been the dream Dutch player Rangers fans were thinking of when van Bronckhorst was appointed as manager but he is a highly-talented player.

Gers legend Ally McCoist is keen to see some Dutch players integrated into the side. Speaking on BT Sport, he said: “I would be very, very hopeful that Giovanni could produce a little bit of Dutch magic for us.”

He may only feature at Ibrox for six months if he even signs at all but Summerville can be that Dutch magic McCoist is talking about.

Summerville’s excellent season at youth level in England has not only earned him opportunities in Bielsa’s first team but has seen him called up to the Holland youth teams.

Originally from Suriname in South America, Summerville has the capabilities to create almost telepathic connections with his attacking peers with intelligent runs and a keen eye for goal.

He could slot into the Rangers attack out wide or take up a position more centrally behind a lead striker and he would perform equally well in any of these areas.

van Bronckhorst might have to convince some that this unproven youngster is the ideal option for the Scottish Premiership leaders but given all the information, there’s no reason why Summerville won’t succeed in Scotland.

In other Rangers news, a “ground-breaking” offer has reportedly been tabled by the Gers for Danish international.
