Rangers set to announce James Sands deal this week

Rangers are reportedly expected to announce the signing of New York City midfielder James Sands this week

According to the Scottish Sun, the 21-year-old is set to become the first signing of the Giovanni van Bronckhorst era and is expected to arrive in Scotland within the next 48 hours.

Gers sold Nathan Patterson to Everton for a club-record fee understood to be as much as £16million and have already started to reinvest it in the squad.

Sands will be joining on an 18-month loan deal and Gers will have the option to make that permanent.

Good move?

Nobody would have liked seeing Patterson leave, but it became inevitable due to his lack of game time this season.

The best Rangers could have hoped was for Everton to offer a significant transfer fee and that’s precisely what they did.

Sands, who is a midfielder by trade, is also capable of playing as a centre-back.

Given Gers’ issues in that position this season and Connor Goldson’s uncertain future, he could play in defence during his early days at the club.

It remains to be seen what GvB does with him in terms of handing him his debut.

Certain managers tend to take their time before throwing in their new signings while the others prefer to embed them with the first-team squad as soon as possible.

Thankfully, the club have an option and not an obligation to buy him so they can make their minds up at the end of the loan spell.
