Leon Balogun returns to Rangers training, could feature v St Mirren

Giovanni van Bronckhorst has confirmed his Rangers team news for the Boxing Day clash against St Mirren.

The Bears are looking to enter the new winter break with a big win, and have been handed a major boost.

Leon Balogun has returned to training on Friday after finally recovering from his long-term injury blow at Auchenhowie.

Speaking to the media as shared on Twitter this morning, van Bronckhorst revealed the major injury news.

“Leon (Balogun) will join in the session today and we will see if he is fit for Sunday, no fresh injury concerns,” he said.

This is the boost we have all been waiting for.

Calvin Bassey has been sensational stepping into the heart of the defence, with Balogun leaving Connor Goldson as the only trusted central defender.

We doubt that Van Bronckhorst will throw Balogun straight back into the starting XI though, but he could come off the bench for some minutes before the winter break.

It could all depend on how Borna Barisic has recovered from his illness after missing the win over Dundee United.

Should the Croatian be missing again, Bassey could move to the left and Balogun could come in.

Let’s just hope for a positive return to training and to full fitness for the enforcer, who has been brilliant in his two years at the club.

With Filip Helander also nearing his full return, this new break could see us return after with a full-strength squad to choose from.
