Jordan Campbell shares if Rangers have made contact with Hearts defender John Souttar

Rangers have not made any contact to sign Hearts defender John Souttar this season, according to Jordan Campbell.

The Athletic journalist has insisted that being a squad option will likely not appeal to the Scotland international after missing so much football.

Initial links came from the Daily Mail, which reported that Souttar was on a list of potential January targets at Ibrox.

Rangers

Writing in his Transfer Mailbag for The Athletic, Campbell shared what he has heard about the Bears raiding Hearts.

“I have not heard about Rangers contacting John Souttar but he too would make sense on paper,” he wrote.

“He is still talking to Hearts and other clubs will be seeking out his interests but his injury history makes a move risky.

“Being a squad option likely won’t interest him after missing so much football.”

Competition?

Hearts are somewhat clinging on to the top two in the Scottish Premiership, although they realistically don’t stand a chance of getting any higher.

Having said that, they will class as near rivals and what is the best way to keep the gap between them? Take away their best players.

Souttar has been sensational this season, and his emergence in the Scotland squad and that goal against Denmark was a magic moment.

With doubts surrounding Connor Goldson’s future at Ibrox and the likes of Jack Simpson not exactly trusted, a new defender appears very likely.

Will it be Souttar? At this stage, it looks as though it won’t be.
