BBC shares major COVID-19 update on Scottish football including Rangers fixtures, Nicola Sturgeon to make announcement

The BBC has shared a major update on rising COVID-19 numbers which look likely to affect Rangers and Scottish football massively.

With Omicron numbers rising rapidly, the government is meeting this morning (21st December) to discuss the possibility of cancelling sporting events.

It is reported that Nicola Sturgeon will make an announcement this afternoon with the findings from the meetings.

The numbers are rising rapidly, and despite Scottish football being in good state compared to English football, it doesn’t look safe right now.

The BBC have shared that the main concerns are regarding fans travelling to and from matches, as well as close contact with others in queues and in toilets.

It does only class the concern for “major” sporting events and it is unclear whether or not that counts every single match in the Scottish Premiership.

The Old Firm on the 2nd of January certainly dips into that category and could Sturgeon make that behind-closed-doors or cancel it altogether?

Another reason behind shutting down major sporting events is potentially freeing up more emergency services crews for other priorities.

Bad news coming?

It looks as though we are all being prepared for games to be cancelled, although that would skip many steps.

Surely, the first step would be bringing back games with no fans, despite the financial implications and loss of real atmosphere.

The Bears thrived in that environment last season, but football is nothing without fans, especially Old Firm games with Celtic.

As things stand, Rangers will have no away fans at Parkhead next month anyway, but things could change massively today.

All eyes and ears will be on Sturgeon’s announcement this afternoon, and it looks as though cancellations are top of the agenda.
