Tom English: Rangers set for difficult fixture pile-up in December

Tom English has predicted a tough month for Rangers in December as the fixtures start to pile up at Ibrox.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst has really been thrown into the deep end since arriving, with nine fixtures alone in this month.

The Dutchman is still unbeaten at Ibrox but has tough games such as the trip to Hearts on Sunday (12th December) to deal with.

Writing in his latest column for the BBC, English pointed out what could be a real issue at Ibrox between now and the end of the month.

“Outside of the UK, no other major league in Europe piles on the games over the festive period the way we do in these parts,” he wrote.

“In this neck of the woods, though, Manchester City, Manchester Utd and Tottenham Hotspur have eight games. Celtic, Rangers, Liverpool, Chelsea, West Ham United and Leicester City all have a nine-game schedule. Not easy.

“But not unusual either. Not in Scotland for sure.”

Busy calendar.

The Christmas period can make or break any team in any league around the world, including Rangers.

It has hit us hard before in recent years, but the way Van Bronckhorst has got this squad playing in his opening month, we can’t see that happening.

The Dutchman has made the Bears more solid at the back and that has given the likes of Ryan Kent more freedom which means it hasn’t hit us negatively in the final third.

English usually can’t help himself with a sly remark given his past with the club, but it looks as though he is pointing out a potential problem within Scottish football.
